What is Whisky? Tasting Masterclass (Thurs 6th Aug 2026)

Six whiskies. Two hours. Everything you've ever wanted to know about whisky.

Whether you're brand new to whisky or you've been drinking it for years without ever really knowing what's in your glass, this is the tasting to start with. It's World of Whisky's most popular masterclass, and it's designed to do one thing: by the time the first dram is poured, you'll understand exactly why each whisky tastes the way it does.

What you'll taste

Six completely different whiskies, each one chosen to show you a different side of the whisky world:

• A classic blended whisky
• A single malt Scotch
• An Irish whiskey
• A bourbon
• And to finish, a big smoky whisky (the one everyone remembers)

What you'll learn

This isn't a lecture, and you don't need to know a thing about whisky to walk in the door. Over two relaxed, entertaining hours, your host will take you through:

• Where whisky comes from, and how Scotland, Ireland, America and Japan each do it differently
• How whisky is actually made, from grain to barrel to bottle
• The different styles and categories, and how to tell them apart
• How to nose, taste and talk about whisky with confidence

Then you put it all into practice, glass by glass.

What's on the table

Alongside your six whiskies you'll find freshly cut baguette, blue cheese, cheddar, dark chocolate and bottled water. The pairings aren't just there to keep you fed. They're part of the tasting, showing you how whisky transforms alongside food.

You'll also have the chance to buy any whisky from the night at a special masterclass-only discount, so if you fall in love with one of the six, it can come home with you.

Coming alone? You won't be for long.

Plenty of guests book solo, and it's one of the friendliest rooms in Sydney. You'll be seated around a shared table in our Double Bay tasting room, swapping impressions with fellow whisky-curious people from your very first pour. Lifelong friendships have started at this table. Our host swears at least one marriage has too.

Grab a friend, bring your partner, or come on your own. Either way, you'll leave knowing more people, and more about whisky, than when you arrived.
