This is the whisky world in miniature — a hand-picked flight of 50ml samples that takes you from soft, honeyed Speyside malts to sweet Kentucky bourbon and finishes on one of the smokiest drams in Scotland. If you're just getting into whisky, there's no better way to find out what you actually like. If you've been drinking it for years, it's six proper pours to taste side by side in a single sitting.

Work through them in order and you'll taste exactly how region, grain and cask change everything in the glass.

Suggested tasting order — lightest to boldest:

1. Glen Grant Arboralis — Speyside Single Malt (40%)
The gentle way in. Soft orchard fruit — think fresh apple and pear — with a malty sweetness, a touch of vanilla and a clean, easy finish. Nothing to intimidate, everything to enjoy.

2. Allt-á-Bhainne — Speyside Single Malt (40%)
A quiet achiever, long used to lift famous blends and only recently bottled in its own right. Light, grassy and fruit-driven, with green apple, a whisper of citrus and a smooth, approachable palate.

3. Glenmorangie X — Highland Single Malt (40%)
Made to be easy company. Rounder and sweeter than a classic Highland malt, with honey, milk chocolate and orange. Lovely neat, and a favourite for whisky cocktails if that's your thing.

4. Johnnie Walker Black Ruby — Blended Scotch (40%)
A modern, fruit-forward twist on the iconic Black Label, matured with red wine and sherry casks. Expect raspberry and blackberry jam, fig, plum and honey, with just a trace of smoke letting the fruit lead. The blend in the flight — smooth and generous.

5. Willett Kentucky Straight Bourbon — Kentucky, USA (47%)
A change of country and grain. American corn brings big, sweet notes of vanilla, caramel and brown sugar, framed by charred oak and a warm, peppery spice. Bottled at a punchier 47%, so there's real depth and heat here.

6. Ardbeg Ten Years Old — Islay Single Malt (46%)
The finale everyone remembers. A wall of peat smoke, tar and sea salt, with lemon and a surprising vanilla sweetness holding underneath. Bold, coastal and unforgettable — the dram that turns curious drinkers into Islay devotees.

Getting the most from your kit

Taste in the order above so the delicate malts aren't flattened by the bourbon and the Ardbeg. Add a few drops of water to open each one up, especially the higher-strength pours, and keep a glass of water and something plain to eat between drams to reset your palate.
