Hakushu

Hakushu History

In 1923, the founder of Suntory, Shinjiro Torii, imagined creating a Japanese whisky crafted with the essence of Japan and artisians through patience and craftmanship. Imagining a delicate yet complex whisky, Torri sought to create a whisky that would cater to the sensibilities of the Japanese tastebuds. Though inspired by Scottish Whisky, Torii created a new Japanese approach by choosing to work with the terrain of his homeland rather than imitate the Scottish climate.

The Hakushu Distillery was built in 1973, 50 years after the Yamazaki distillery. Keizo Saji, the second Master Blender took leaps in pushing the boundaries of Japanese Whisky. Searching all of Japan for the perfect high quality water to produce whisky, Saji found Hakushu, deep in the Japanese Southern Alps.

The Hakushu Production

Produced from pure waters of Southern Japanese Alps, Hakashi is a combination of lightly peated and heavily peated malt. As one of the three distilleries owned by Suntory, their Distiller's Reserve single malt, no age statement expression is praised by the most curious whisky connoisseurs and lovers of gastronomy. However, despite owned by the same company, the whisky produced by Yamazaki is vastly different from Hakushu, taking into account the different water and environment. With a variety of pots stills and casks chosen carefully to match the climate and high elevation of Hakushu, Hakushu is a unique whisky which reflects its rugged mountain surroundings.

Hakushu Malting and Taste

This highly complex and deeply enjoyable whisky is known for its crisp and vibrant taste. Light gold in colour this whisky has a refreshing nose of peppermint, melon and cucumber. The palate is then cleansing, with traces of yuzu, grapefruit and lemon thyme. This is topped off with subtle smoke.
