Ardbeg

The name Ardbeg comes from the Gaelic word 'ad bheag' for small hill. Officially established in 1815 by the MacDougall family, Ardberg was distilling whiskey long before, from as early as 1794 unofficially. The sales were high during the earlier years of Ardberg, and in 1835, they had to raise production to meet demand.By 1886 the distillery produced 300,000 gallons of whiskey per year with 60 workers in its employment. However, the distillery fell foul of the global whisky downturn in the late 1970s, which led to the distillery falling silent in 1981. Production resumed sporadically in 1989, but the distillery fell silent again in 1996. Luckily, in 1997, Ardberg was purchased by Glenmorangie, and the past years has seen a magnificent turnaround in fortunes for this previously abandoned distillery.
The Ardbeg Production
Ardberg is an astounding whisky that has been called "close to perfection". As a single malt whisky born on the small remote Scottish Isle of Islay, Ardberg is heavily peated with a hint of coastal air and smoke. In the past 10 years, prestigious titles including World Whisky of the Year, Scotch Whisky of the Year and World's best Single Malt, has been awarded to different Ardberg expressions.
Malting and Taste
The malting was done at the Ardbeg distillery until the beginning of the 1980s. Today Ardbeg buys their malt from the Port Ellen maltings with a high peat smoke content. The usual phenol content of the barley is said to average around 55 ppm. The whiskies of Ardberg are said to be heavily peated malts. The whiskies focus on aromas of spices, malt or sweet tones like vanilla and chocolate. As a fan favourite, Ardberg 10 year old matured for a decade to achieve exceptional balance and depth. With a bewitching aroma of toffee, chocolate and cinammon spice, floral notes of white wine are apparent. It also carries the scent of fresh citrus, melon, pear drops and a gentle creaminess.
