History

Redbreast is the premium whisky brand of the parent distillery Irish Distillers, distilled by Midleton Distillery. The whisky officially gained the name Redbreast in 1912, though the whiskey’s forerunner was introduced in 1903. It was introduced by Gilbey’s - a brewing, wine and spirits distribution company - using distillate from Jameson’s Bow Street Distillery in Dublin. In 1971, the Redbreast whisky production moved to Cork from Dublin as part of a distillery consolidation process by then joint owners Gilbey’s and Irish Distillers. In 1986, Irish Distillers bought the brand from Gilbey’s and relaunched it in 1991 after a several years of hiatus of production. Today, the Redbreast brand has received several accolades, including ‘Irish Whiskey of the Year’ in 2007 for the Redbreast 15-Year-Old bottling.

Production

Since rerelease, Redbreast has established itself as a historically unique choice because it is one of the last remaining single pot still whiskies available. The Midleton Distillery has two different distilleries: one with column stills and the other the Irish single pot still, where Redbreast is produced. Both malted and unmalted barley are used before being triple distilled in copper pot stills. They are matured in oak casks, with deep flavour profiles in part due to the small runs of spirit produced.

Tasting and Malt

The peats are a mixture of malted and unmalted, giving rise to a balance between dry and creamy texture. The nose sparks tropical fruit aromas with a nutty undertone. To taste, the high-quality oak casks come through with warm spices, landing with a silky mouthfeel. To finish, the barley, oak and spices combine to linger lengthily and pleasantly.
