Glenfiddich Whisky History

Named after the Gaelic word “Glenfiddich” meaning ‘Valley of the Deer’.

William Grant founded the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland in 1886. Grant’s aim was to produce the best dram in the valley, that he built completely by hand with the help of his nine children.

On Christmas Day, 1887 the first spirit spilt out from the stills, kicking off one of the world's most iconic single malt Scotch whisky brands.

Glenfiddich has consistently exhibited resilience and inventiveness throughout its history. During Prohibition in the United States (1920-1933’s) Glenfiddich increased production during this trying time. This strategic undertaking prepared them to meet the demands for fine aged whisky following Prohibition's repeal.

During the 1950’s, Glenfiddich established an onsite cooperage, to maintain the copper pot stills. The stills are much smaller than most larger styled distilleries, which give Glenfiddich’s whiskies distinct flavour characteristics.

In 1963, Glenfiddich was the very first Scottish distillery to put single malt whisky on the market at a global scale, paving the way for modern single malt whiskies.

Today, the company is still family owned and produces whisky on site utilising water from the Robbie Dhu springs in Dufftown.

It matures in a variety of casks, including rum barrels from the Caribbean, bourbon barrels from America, and sherry butts from Spain, to allow a diverse and broad range of flavour expressions.

At World of Whisky, we offer a carefully curated range of Whiskies from renowned distilleries across the world, including Laphroaig, Sullivans Cove, and Taliskers. Shop now!
