The Tomatin 12 Year Old is smooth and silky, having been matured in traditional Scotch Whisky, ex-Bourbon and ex-Spanish Sherry casks. A rich, fruity aroma is the prelude to sweet flavours of ripe apples, pears and a subtle hint of nut before the long, pleasantly oily finish.

The origins of whisky production in Tomatin are hard to be precise about - the formal distillery which operates today was established in 1897 but there is reason to believe that whisky production, albeit illegal, has been an important part of life in the area around Tomatin since the 1700s.

The name itself gives an insight into this secret past: “Tomatin” translates to “Hill of the Juniper Bush”, as juniper wood gives off no smoke while burning it has long been a favourite of illicit distillers who must keep their practice secret. Today, a building known locally as “The Old Laird’s House” still remains on the site of the current distillery

However, it was only in 1897 at the peak of the Victorian Whisky Boom that three men, John MacDougall, John MacLeish and Alexander Allan, along with a handful of investors,
decided to open a formal distillery on the site and form The Tomatin Spey District Distillery Ltd.

Located south of Inverness, Tomatin was for a time the largest producer of whisky in Scotland and today still remains one of the key whisky producers in the Highlands.

We are extremely proud to announce our latest product accolades from the prestigious 2022 IWSC awards. Only three whiskies in the entire competition scored 99 out of 100 and two of those were Tomatin Single Malt – an outstanding achievement I’m sure you’ll agree!

Tomatin Legacy was awarded an extraordinary 99/100 resulting in a tremendous “Gold Outstanding” award! The Judges’ comments on this exceptional single malt were: “Ripe honeyed lemons and sweet vanilla fudge characterise the nose, while a pleasant fresh grapefruit flavour comes through wonderfully on the palate creating a superb lift. Fragrant and complex, with a harmonious, lingering finish.”

The Tomatin 12 year old was presented Gold after achieving 95/100 from the judging panel, with the following comments:  “Rich tarte tatin defines the nose with delicate aromas of sweet baking spice and white pepper. Ripe and fruity on the palate, marvellously complex and layered, with a rich, malty undercurrent. Excellent harmony and length on the finish.”
